Many Canadian hopefuls leave home in their early teens to play in the minors for a chance to make it to the big leagues. As a result, continuing their education isn’t always the biggest priority. For many, it’s actually the last thing on their minds.

Like many aspiring young hockey players, I grew up with the singular focus of playing in the NHL. I was fortunate enough to have been drafted at age 18 and signed a professional contract with the Los Angeles Kings at age 20.
