Fort Garry 10A1 North Hockey Team Shoots and Scores in CST Community Contest

Fort Garry Team Cheque

Here at CST, we love hockey – but extracurricular activities shouldn’t come at the price of investing in your child’s education.

We recently conducted a survey that revealed some shocking news: Canadians are willing to go into debt to put their child in hockey. Actually, three out of five Canadian parents (61 per cent) say they, or someone they know, have borrowed money or used their retirement savings to put a child through hockey or other extracurricular activities. What’s more, the average household spends $1,500 on hockey related expenses, which is more than the typical Canadian household invests in education savings ($1,455 per year). [1] Yikes!

To help Canadians set more money aside for their child’s post-secondary education, we launched Beyond the Blue Line - a community education initiative and contest that invited teams and/or associations to share their ideas about how to encourage community involvement and academic success. We offered a $10,000 prize to the team/association that told us how they plan to use the money to make hockey less expensive, and therefore, help them focus on saving for education. Being one of Canada’s leading providers of education savings solutions, we figured it’s the least we could do.

We launched the contest on our website on November 12, 2013 and accepted entries until December 31, 2013. Our judges then selected three finalists and we opened up the online voting to the public from January 14 to January 28, 2014. Impressing our judges with the creativity of their entry and the number of votes generated (2,200+), the winner of the Beyond the Blue Line community contest was the Fort Garry 10A1 North hockey team from Winnipeg, Manitoba! The team came up with a great idea for a website that would encourage hockey families to buy gently used equipment while investing in RESPs. They also plan to donate a portion of the funds to the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation.

The team was recently awarded the $10,000 prize at one of their playoff games by Winnipeg-based CST Branch Manager Joan Pankratz-Turner and Sales Rep Derek Turner. Check out those winning smiles!

[1] The Leger survey was completed between October 1 and October 3, 2013 with a sample of 1503 Canadians 18+. A probability sample of the same size would yield a margin of error of +/- 2.5 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
